Your products and services must be easy to identify without mistakes and traceable wherever necessary.
What does identification mean?
It means that a product or service has a clear name and identifier so that people know what it is and do not use it incorrectly.
This includes unfinished products too.
Example: a household-appliance manufacturer has 100 workstations making parts for 5 household appliances. How do we identify which product a manufactured part belongs to? Has its quality been checked? Has the part been rejected or found defective?
The answer is to establish a suitable product-identification method that:
A- Assigns each part a name, code or barcode.
B- Identifies the status of the part produced. For example, use white baskets for produced but unchecked parts, green baskets for approved parts, and red baskets for rejected and defective parts.
What does traceability mean?
I will answer this with an example.
Go to your medicine box at home now, pick up a medicine and look for a long number, usually preceded by "Batch no." You can do the same with all reputable commercially produced foods.
What is this number, and what is it used for?
It is your product's traceability code. Through it, the manufacturer can, for example, determine:
A- The date and time the product was manufactured.
B- The machine used to manufacture it.
C- The operator who manufactured it.
D- The person who approved its quality.
E- The specifications of the raw materials used in it.
What use does this have?
A-When a business receives a product returned by a customer, the traceability code allows it to investigate the problem and helps identify the cause.
B- The business discovers a previously unnoticed problem with a factor affecting quality, such as a raw material. That material has now been converted into products and distributed.
In both situations, an emergency recall procedure is used to recall or request the return of all potentially affected products, so that they do not harm the customer or cause dissatisfaction.
