Before doing anything else, first take a look at article 6.

It explained a four-stage cycle and also discussed the importance of the planning stage or phase.

Good design greatly reduces subsequent rework and corrections.

Statistics and evidence indicate that, if a mistake is identified during design, correcting it costs 1 unit, whereas correction in later stages costs between 10 and 100 units.

Example: an architect designs a residential house but does not devote enough care to it or review the design with the customer. After the plans have been implemented, the customer visits and finds that some of their requirements have not been reflected in the building. The architect has used decorative plasterwork and concealed lighting according to their own taste, to make the building more attractive. Now the customer insists that all the plasterwork and lighting be removed.
Had the architect discussed the design with the customer before implementation, meeting the customer's requirements would have cost only a few minutes and a change to the drawings. After construction, however, both the cost of installing the plasterwork and lighting is lost and the cost of removal and alteration is added to the project's expenses.

Good design must use and observe all inputs, including customer requirements, legal requirements, the business's internal requirements, and previous experience and records.

This work is usually carried out by a multidisciplinary team whose members each contribute to the design from their own specialist perspective.
For example, having a finance specialist on the design team does not mean that this person should also comment on technical or aesthetic aspects. Their responsibility is to continually monitor the project's budget and ensure costs do not exceed a specified amount.
Likewise, a procurement and sourcing specialist on the team is responsible for assessing whether the items required by the design can be obtained or parts of it outsourced.

It is a misunderstanding of teamwork to assume that every team member should comment on and intervene in every matter.

After every design change, all the relevant aspects must be checked again to ensure that the change has not negatively affected the product's requirements and obligations. The design team must also establish that, from their different specialist perspectives, the changes create no problems.

A customer might, for instance, request a change that is technically possible and would make them happy, but the team's finance specialist might reject it because of its financial implications, or make it conditional on the customer paying for the requested change.
