Identify Your Senior Business Manager: They Will Captain Your Ship.

Comparing a business to a ship and its senior manager to a captain makes the subject of this article much easier to understand.

The captain takes the ship from its starting point to its destination. Along the way, the captain must keep an eye on everything so that the ship, its cargo, crew and passengers all arrive safely, at the lowest cost and in the shortest time.

If this role becomes unclear or weakened and everyone starts interfering in the ship's command, you surely know what happens: the ship drifts aimlessly, the crew become confused and uncertain, there is no plan, and so on.

It is very good that you came together as a group and agreed to start a business. But that does not mean you should all captain the business at the same time.

The usual approach is to form a group known in business as the board of directors. Its job is to provide the senior manager with overall direction, advice, goals and plans, and receive reports at specified intervals to make sure the manager is moving correctly toward the goal.

It should not mean that everyone independently acts as a boss in their own corner.

If you do not give your senior manager the necessary freedom to act and constantly interfere, question decisions and overrule them, your business will undoubtedly not end well.

Give your senior manager enough time: at least the equivalent of a financial period, meaning one year. Depending on the sensitivity and type of business, however, hold meetings, for example monthly or fortnightly, to receive progress reports.

The senior manager has a major responsibility: running the entire business and ensuring that goals, particularly those set to satisfy customers and other stakeholders, are understood and followed throughout the business.

Example: have you noticed something at the start of a flight when you board an airplane?

A crew member speaking on behalf of the captain, or the captain personally, announces information over the cabin speakers: the aircraft model, the flight's origin and destination, how many minutes the journey will take, the altitude above sea level, weather along the route, temperatures at the departure and arrival airports, and so on.

Why do you think they tell you these things?
