The PDCA cycle, or the rice-buying cycle, is undoubtedly one of the most important and remarkable tools, useful not only in business but also in everyday life.
PDCA stands for these words:
Plan: plan or make arrangements.
Do: implement.
Check: check.
Act: take action or institutionalize the result.
What does this have to do with buying rice?
For years, I have used an Iranian name for this cycle in my teaching to make it easier to learn. The advantage is that it is easier to remember.
The usual standard method an Iranian man follows when buying rice is this :):
A- Receive the order from his wife: the rice specifications, such as how much the grains lengthen, aroma, flavor and so on, and the required quantity.
B- Buy a sample: purchase a small quantity from the rice seller, enough for one meal.
C- Cook the sample rice and evaluate it.
D- If it is good, buy the planned quantity. If not, go back, correct the problems in step A or B and try again.
It is that simple!! Can you believe this is one of the world's best-known and most widely used management tools?!
- Step A is actually the P, or planning, phase.
- Step B is the D, or implementation, phase (better described as a trial implementation).
- Step C is the C, or checking, phase.
- Step D is the A, or action, phase.
You can be sure that, if this cycle is correctly used and followed, it prevents many mistaken decisions and actions in business and even in our personal lives.
The tool's main strength lies in the P phase. The more carefully this phase is carried out, the fewer problems there will be in later phases.
Another important point is trial implementation. However good a plan or idea looks on paper, it must first be tested on a small scale.
Exercise: look back at the past and consider which actions you should not have taken if you had followed this tool's principles.
