The Process Concept in Simple Terms

In the previous article, I discussed the resources and factors affecting quality: people, machinery, raw materials, methods and instructions.

I explained that, if you achieve or lose quality, it is very likely because of these factors.

In this article, we examine where quality-related resources and factors fit within a process.

First, what does process mean?

A process is a set of activities that together turn a series of inputs into outputs.

Example: in a cafe, the person serving a customer receives an order for fried eggs. This is the input. Based on that order, through a series of steps and using the resources mentioned above, the output, the ordered fried eggs, is delivered to the customer.

Now let us review the example again in slow motion:

Input: the customer's fried-egg order, including information such as the number of eggs, whether butter or oil should be used for frying, and whether the yolks should be runny or firm.

Activity 1: preparing the fried eggs.

Activity 2: serving the fried eggs.

The resources and factors affecting quality used in this process:

A- People: the cook.

B- Raw materials: eggs, oil or butter, salt.

C- Method: the instructions for cooking fried eggs.

D- Machinery and tools: stove, frying pan, spoon and serving plate.

Now imagine the processes that exist and operate in a cafe or your own business.

Why must we understand processes? Because every business consists of interconnected processes. If any one of them fails to do its job properly, the business is harmed.

In the cafe example, there is a purchasing process responsible for buying the cafe's raw materials. It purchases according to an order from the cafe manager and delivers part of its output, the purchased goods such as eggs, oil and salt, to the kitchen, or more precisely, to the cooking process.

What happens if the purchasing process does not deliver fresh, high-quality raw materials at a suitable price?

Understanding processes means that, if a product or service is unsatisfactory, we do not immediately blame a worker or employee without investigation.

Understanding processes helps us avoid overlooking anything. It reminds us that good business output is not accidental: it results from processes that are well defined, specified and interconnected.
